Sometimes you just want something that works. Apple is famous for the neatly integrated desktop systems. When I wanted a Unix system with good graphics, I got a second hand iMac. Apple provide OS updates free of charge for supported systems.
There is good support for OSX from the free software community, so getting Blender, the GIMP, and QGIS was easy.
